KUKAMA COMPOSTING PROGRAM
Kukama Compost is a compost and environmental education program created and managed by student
leaders in agrarian sciences, anthropology, business, and sustainability at the National Unversity of the
Peruvian Amazon in Iquitos. The program aims to implement a circular economy to support composting
and community health in Iquitos, where over half of solid waste is organic and where no systematic composting has been done previously. Kukama Compost partners with local Indigenous Kukama clay artisans to create ceramic compost bins, supporting Indigenous livelihoods and curbing dependance on
imported materials like plastics. Kukama Compost is partnering with EarthLab and Traction, which have supported the improvement of composting infrastructure while providing mentorship regarding circular economic systems. This ongoing project supports community-based livelihoods alongside continued capacity building for city-wide scale up of Kukama Compost.
